Alginate sheet:The Islet Sheet (Islet Sheet Medical LLC) is a multilayered construct of alginate hydrogel cast in a thin flat sheet with a reinforcing scrim that is completely sandwiched on both sides by an acellular immunoprotective alginate layer. The entire construct is cross-linked with calcium chloride; the substance of the sheet is a quasi-homogeneous alginate hydrogel studded with islet and scrim inclusions. Islet Sheets can be fabricated into any size device and maintain homeostasis by passive diffusion of oxygen, glucose, and nutrients into the sheet, and insulin and other hormones out of the sheet. Islet Sheets will be fabricated by Dr. Storrs at Dr. Lakey’s laboratory at UC Irvine.
